Ayurvedic Herbs
Since Ayurveda is a a complete health care system it recognizes that all plants have some medicinal value. There are however certain herbs that are have very powerful healing properties and are more commonly used in Ayurvedic preparations.
Powerful Ayurvedic Herbs
Among the most potent Ayurvedic herbs are:
Ashwaganda - Also known as Withania somnifera, Indian ginseng, Winter cherry, Ajagandha, Kanaje, Ayamodakam and Samm Al Ferakh. Ashwaganda is known for it's ability to strengthen the nervous system. It is an adaptogen and increases the body's resistance to stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Ashwaganda has a heating effect and is often used in in formulas with other less heating herbs.
Brahmi - also known as Bacopa monnieri, Coastal Waterhyssop, Thyme-leafed gratiola, and Water hyssop is a powerfull antioxidant, and is an effective and powerful brain and nerve tonic.
Amla Berry - Also called Indian gooseberry Phyllanthus emblica, syn. Emblica officinalis, or amalaka in Sanskrit is known to have a more cooling effect despite it's sour taste. The Amla berry tree is considered sacred and is used in a variety Ayurvedic formulations. Here is a a short list of a few of it's uses:
- Promoting longevity
- Aid Digestion
- Reduce fevers
- Purify the blood
- Alleviate Asthma
- Strengthen the heart
- Stimulate hair growth
Shatavari also called asparagus root is considered by Ayurveda as is one of the most important tonics for female rejuvenation, but can also be taken by males with beneficial effects. The name Shatavari in Sanskrit translates to meaning "she who possesses a hundred husbands".
Shatavari is used in in the treatment of many other diseases and like Ashwaganda is also an adaptogen supporting the immune system, and strengthening the central nervous system.
Ayurvedic herbal medicine is much more than just herbs
While the herbs taken in isolation do have very powerful healing properties, it should be understood that the practice of Ayurvedic herbology is much more powerful. In ayurveda herbs are combined into formulations called Rasayana formulas, that can have a far more balancing effect than the herbs taken individually.
