Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic massage is far more specific and comprehensive than other forms of massage. When correctly performed Ayurvedic massages will balance the entire physiology by utilizing the connection between the mind, body and spirit.

Ayurvedic Massage and Marma Points

Marma is a Sanskrit word that means hidden, or secret. A marma point is a place on the body where two or more types of tissue meet, such as muscles, veins, ligaments, bones or joints. These points are much more than physical connecting points, they are the points where the physical body most strongly connects to pure consciousness (the unified unmanifest field of all possibilities).

By massaging and enlivening marma points, Ayurvedic massage awakens the holistic value of consciousness within the physical body.

Ayurvedic Massage and The Three Dosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha)

Ayurveda understands that the body is comprised of subtle energies called doshas. There are three doshas which are in turn condensed from the five elements as follows.

Vata Dosha - Air and Space*

Pitta Dosha - Fire and Water

Kapha Dosha - Earth and Water

*The vedic tradition recognizes space as a fifth element.

Some combination of these three doshas are responsible for every function within the body. Every part of the body contains all three doshas but different areas of the body contain a predominance of certain doshas. This understanding of the doshas and their seating within the body is an important part of authentic Ayurvedic massage.

Ayurveda Massage Oils

Different Ayurvedic herbal massage oils are used for people with a predominance of different doshas. The top Ayurvedic spas practicing authentic Ayurveda will not only use different herbs in the massage oils but will also offer different types of oils and/or oils heated to different temperatures depending on each patients needs. For example people who are predominately Kapha and Vata (tend to be colder) and so might have a warmer oil containing more heating herbs. Organic Massage Oils

Because the massage oil is the medium through which Ayurvedic toxins are expelled from the body during treatments, it is important that the only the highest quality oils are used, and that oils are are not recycled between patients.
